Longbow archery is thriving at Frome Town Archers.

In increasing numbers, Ladies, juniors and Gentlemen are
discovering the pleasure of shooting our country’s most famous weapon, here in
Frome.

They are sharing the same joys and frustrations as their
medieval ancestors as they strive to master what, although simple looking, is in
fact one of the hardest of all bows to shoot well.

That said; they also share in the immense sense of
satisfaction that comes from seeing their wooden arrow, often made by their
own hand, wing its way to the target, propelled only by another piece of wood
and the archer’s strong arm.

We shoot both target and clout on Saturday afternoons, in a
spirit of friendly competition, the emphasis always being on friendly, and on
fun.  More experienced archers are always
on hand and always willing to give help and advice to the the novice.

Often our shoots are designed to represent the past, such as
when, Pierre our full size knight in armour dares to venture onto the field.

Or perhaps we will just round off the afternoon with a
couple of dozen arrows at the wand, another tradition that goes back to medieval
times.

On any of our shoots you will find longbows being shot that
vary in draw weight from lighter bows, suitable for the growing arms of juniors, to Victorian
target bows, and more recently, even a few replicas of the medieval warbow. All
versions of the longbow are welcome.
